Interference Evaluation and Compatibility Study Between the GMRT and Satellite-to-Device Communication Uplink
This study evaluates the potential interference from satellite-to-device (D2D) communication uplink transmissions to the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), operating in the Radio Astronomy Service (RAS) frequency band of 1400–1427 MHz. It assesses the compatibility between radio astronomy observations and Satellite-D2D communication systems operating in the adjacent frequency band of 1427–1518 MHz. The study examines potential interference due to unwanted emissions and out-of-band emissions from D2D systems, evaluates their impact on the sensitive GMRT receivers, and assesses compliance with the applicable radio astronomy protection criteria. The results aim to support spectrum-sharing assessments and identify appropriate technical and regulatory measures to ensure the continued protection of radio astronomy observations.

This work involves the design and optimization of a horn feed for a beam-waveguide Cassegrain antenna, followed by Geometrical Optics (GO) and Physical Optics (PO) analysis to evaluate radiation characteristics, reflector illumination, gain, and overall antenna performance.
Parallel I/O Expander Using Atmel ATF15xx Devices
Emulate a Intel 8255 PPI implementation in Atmel ATF15xx devices. It serves as a 5V tolerant and modern replacement for classic 8-bit systems. Selected student needs to develop the 8255 logic in Prochip Designer / Wincupl verify the functionality, implement and test all modes of operation in hardware.
Convert Relay Logic to Solid State Logic For ARVI AC Motor Drives
At present the AC Motors of the 32 m are controlled using relay logic which is less reliable. It is planned to convert this into Solid State Relay Logic (SSRL) in line with the GMRT SSRL.
PTP-based WALSH Demodulator Using Generic Embedded Board
This project aims to upgrade existing Walsh Demodulator at GMRT antenna base to overcome dependencies on leagacy LO system for synchronisation. The student has to survey and use an affordable Single board computer to keep Walsh Synchronisation scheme for GMRT radio telescope using network time (PTP). The student's main job is program the SBC to generate a stable CPLD clock, reliably detect incoming timing (sequency) pulses, and optionally generate Walsh patterns on it's I/O pins. Because these signals must travel over longer distances between hardware modules located at the top of Antenna Front-end system, the student may have to design and fabricate a custom line driver PCB if required.
Automated servo control console for Ooty Radio Telescope
Ooty Radio Telescope, built in 1970s, has manual electrical console to SLEW and TRACK it to a desired position. Astronomers would like to have synchronized movement of the telescope based on RA and DEC of the radio sources at the LST. The automated servo control console will be based on a SBC-PC104 to read a command file and issue the SLEW and TRACK commands based on astronomical requirements. Project will involve programming in C to write a servo controller and building isolation-electronics to issue the servo commands to the telescope through existing electric console.
