At GMRT centre Khodad, we are working on the design & development of improved modules for various sub-systems of the telescope. This involves various aspects of engineering and over the years we have found that many colleges in Pune and nearby districts have shown interest in the work we do and have enquired about possibility of allowing their students to do engineering projects at GMRT centre. In order to regularise the student projects and make it a formal arrangement similar to the Visiting Students Research Program (VSRP) at NCRA A formal STP program is being introduced from July 2023.
NCRA runs both short and long term student training program (STP) twice in a year at GMRT Observatory. These programs are meant for engineering students to gain practical experience in various aspects of Telescope and Receiver design and development.
The STP programs are open to students pursuing :
3rd or Final Year BE/BTech (Any Branch)
MSc (Physics/Astronomy) or ME/MTech.
Projects are offered in a wide range of topics including
Electronics (Analog/Digital)
Instrumentation
Signal Processing
Data Analysis and Image Processing
Mechanical & Structural
Electrical engineering
Computer science
Application forms for both the short and long term programs can be done online CLICK HERE TO APPLY ONLINE FOR STP. Please feel free to send email (res@ncra.tifr.res.in) or write to the Coordinator, Student Program, NCRA-TIFR, Post Bag 3, Ganeshkhind, Pune 411 007, if you require more information.
TYPES OF STP PROGRAMs AT GMRT
Considering requirements of the engineering team and students, two types of STP programs are introduced.
This is based on our experience with the type of projects available at GMRT centre, which can be generally
classified as short term (duration between 1 to 3 months) and long term (4 to 12 months).
Standard short term STP (STP-1) :
These will be short term projects done at GMRT site and students will be issued a certificate on successful completion.
No. of students in one project :
Academic level for the program :
Academic qualification :
Duration of the Program :
Project location :
Availability at GMRT :
upto 2 *
Students curently pursuing 3rd or 4th year BE.Students currently pursuing ME
First Class (min) in SSC, HSC First Class (min) in all completed semesters of BE and ME
1 to 3 Months
GMRT Labs, Khodad
Full time (Part time projects not allowed)
* In case of larger projects, number of students can increase upto 4 nos (max) - with special approval from Centre Director
ME / BE project STP (STP-2) : These projects are relatively long term projects which will be part of the requirements for award of degree by a university.
No. of students in one project :
Academic level for the program :
Academic qualification :
Duration of the Program :

Students at final year BE or ME program only
First Class (min) in all completed semesters of BE and ME
4 to 6 Months
GMRT Labs, Khodad
Full time #
* In case of larger projects, Number of students can increase upto 4 nos (max) - with special approval from Centre Director
** In rare cases when the scope of project is large and the University norms allow, 1 year projects also may be allowed. (Request for ONE year projects to be given by Project Guide with approval of Centre Director)
# Part time projects may be allowed in special cases with approval of the project guide and Group Co-ordinator. Students on part-time projects to be available for a minimum of two days in a week.
The selected students are expected to contact STP co-ordinator or the project guide to finalise the exact date and duration of the project work,
and other logistics like accomodation and transport arrangements.
After successful completion of the project work, the students have to give a short presentation on the work done,
submit a technical report giving all details (approved by the project guide).
A Certificate for completion of program will be issued only after completion of these formalities
PROJECT SCHEDULE - IMPORTANT DATES
Standard short term STP (STP-1) :
STP-1 program will be offered during 2 slots : Nov-Jan, May-July
